The Antigonish Bantam Lions took top honours at the Miramichi Hoops Basketball Classic last weekend.
The Lions faced Riverview, New Brunswick, in opening round action, emerging with a 45-31 win.
Rhyley Bowen led all scorers with 21 points. Andrew Milner and Kieran Scott each contributed four points. Ryan MacNeil was the player of the game.
The Lions dropped a 41-38 decision to Fredericton with Patrick Bowen the top scorer for the Antigonish team with 11 points.
Rhyley Bowen and Jarrett Rossong each scored eight points. Scott added four points and was named the player of the game.
River Valley, N.B., fell 51-39 to the Lions with Rhyley Bowen scoring 16 points and twin brother Patrick adding 13. Scott contributed seven points and game MVP Lucas Perry had six.
In the gold medal game the Royals claimed a 59-48 win over the host Miramichi entry.
Rhyley Bowen poured in 25 points and Milner added 13. Patrick Bowen had a strong game with 10 points and 22 rebounds, earning player of the game honours.
The Lions were on the road Jan. 21 for a pair of games.
Antigonish opened against the Fall River Rebels and came out on the short end of a 53-38 score.
Rhyley Bowen led the Lions with 14 points, while Rossong contributed nine.
Also scoring were Patrick Bowen with six points, Sachin Mohandes and Scott with four each and Arthur Hubley with two points.
The Lions travelled to Dartmouth where they emerged with a hard fought 61-57 victory over the Lakers.
Rhyley Bowen led the scorers with 20 points. Scott and Milner chipped in eight points each, while Patrick Bowen added six. Rounding out the scoring for the Lions were Rossong with five points, Garrett Jenkins and Lucas Perry with four each and Hubley, Tyler Barker and McNeil each contributing two points.
The Lions played host to teams from Sydney and West Pictou Jan. 29.
In the first contest, the Lions were able to hold off the Northside Knicks for a 61-57 win.
Rhyley Bowen continued to be consistent on the offensive end, posting a 22- point effort in the game.
Rossong and Milner added 13 and 12 points respectively, while Scott added seven points. Jenkins and Barker each scored three points, while Patrick Bowen had two.
In the second game, the Lions were victorious, beating West Pictou 72-55.
Top scorers were Rhyley Bowen with 22, Rossong with 10 and Patrick Bowen with nine. Also scoring were MacNeil and Peter Lumsden with seven each, Perry with five and Scott and Milner with four each.
