Riverview Royals captured the 9th annual Ian Spencer Memorial/Scotsburn Dairy basketball tournament at Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School.
The Cape Breton School opened the event with a 78-51 victory over the host Royals after leading 38-34 at halftime.
Allison Keough turned in a 24-point performance to lead Riverview to victory, while Kara MacKinnon contributed 16 points. Holly Scott paced the host team offensively with 17 points and six rebounds and Kelly MacGillivray added 14 points. Kalli MacDonald and Melanie Stewart contributed eight and seven points, respectively.
Scott was the player of the game for the home Royals, while Heather MacPherson claimed the coach’s award.
Riverview defeated Park View Panthers from Bridgewater 57-35. MacKinnon scored 16 points and Kayla MacIntyre added 13. Bre Haley paced the Park View offense with 14 points.
Keough poured in 44 points to lead Riverview to a 72-48 win over Horton Griffins from Wolfville. Candace Smith was the top scorer for the Griffins with 22 points, while Molly Johnson added nine.
The Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals defeated Horton 80-54 Saturday morning. Stewart scored a game-high 18 points and hauled down six rebounds, while Scott added 16 and MacDonald chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds. MacGillivray and Abby MacInnis also hit double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. MacGillivray was the player of the game with Stewart earning the coach’s award.
Graysen Parker topped the scoring attack for Horton with 18 points and Drue MacPherson scored 17.
Primrose Chareka grabbed 12 rebounds and contributed five points for the Royals.
In their final game of the weekend the Royals defeated the Park View Panthers 60-31.
MacGillivray scored 15 points with game star MacPherson adding 13 points and five rebounds. Scott chipped in with 12 points, while MacDonald added nine points and nine rebounds. The coach’s award went to Abby MacInnis. Haley scored 16 points for Park View.
In other action Horton beat Park View 55-42 with Smith leading the way with 26 points and Lauren Jodrey contributing 15 points. Haley scored 14 for Park View with Leigh Manley adding 13.
In post tournament awards Grade 12 guard Heather MacPherson captured the Ian Spencer Memorial plaque for spirit and enthusiasm, while Keough earned tournament most valuable player honours. The all-star team was comprised of MacGillivray and MacDonald, Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional; MacKinnon, Riverview; Haley, Park View, and Smith from Horton.
The Royals faced the CEC Cougars in league play Feb. 7 in Truro, coming out on the short end of a 74-56 score. MacGillivray scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the game, while Scott added 13 points and MacDonald chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Stewart and Chareka each contributed seven points in the game with Chareka adding 11 rebounds.
The Royals hit the post season Thursday in New Glasgow at North Nova High School. The Northumberland Region playoffs open with the Royals taking on the Gryphons in a 6 p.m. start. The winner will meet the CEC Cougars Friday at 6.p.m.
The Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional boys’ basketball team won a playoff game 69-47 at East Hants Friday. Leading scorers were Frank MacFarlane with 19 points and Brandon MacDonald with 10 points. The Royals then went on to play in a tournament at Horton High School. They won their first game Friday afternoon against Central Kings by a score of 63 – 54. MacFarlane poured in 28 points, while Jermal Mansfield added 11 points and 25 rebounds. MacDonald chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds. Playing their third game of the day the Royals lost to Cobequid Education Centre. Mansfield had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Saturday, the Royals lost to the host Horton High School. Leading scorers were MacFarlane with 19 points and Edmund Dobson with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Royals resume action this weekend when they will take part in regional playoff action at Northumberland High School.
The senior boys’ hockey team from Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional skated to a 9-1 victory over North Nova in action Thursday night at the Keating Centre. Dave MacDonald, on a set-up from Aaron Connolly, opened the scoring for the Royals with Neal Ryan supplying a pair to give the Royals a 3-0 lead after the opening period. Connolly, Riley MacIsaac, Broghan MacDonald and Sam Vautour earned assists in the frame. Riley Broussard scored on the powerplay at 2:52 of the second from Mike Tobin and Sam Gorman. Tobin increased the league to 5-0 just six seconds later and Dylan MacLean added a goal with five minutes left in the period from Tobin and Evan MacDonald. North Nova scored a goal 61 seconds into the third but the Royals came back with markers from Tobin, Kyle Bouchie and Evan MacDonald to conclude the scoring in the game. Evan MacDonald, Stephen Chisholm and Tobin earned assists in the third period.
The Royals will hit the playoff trail this week, hosting North Nova Thursday in a 7 p.m. start at the Keating Centre. The best-of-five series will continue Friday at 6:30 p.m.in New Glasgow.
