The St. F.X. X-Men will host its annual pre-season tournament this weekend.
The four-team St. F.X. Invitational, which includes the X-Men, UPEI Panthers, Cape Breton Capers and Dalhousie Tigers, will tip-off Friday.
At 6 p.m., the Capers and Tigers will play, while the Panthers and X-Men will take the court, at 8 p.m.
The consolation game is set for Saturday, at 6 p.m., followed by the championship match-up (8 p.m.).
“We have been focused in practice and there is a lot of competitiveness,” All-Canadian Kevin Bercy said of the X-Men’s pre-season, to date, in an Oct. 18 interview.
Over the weekend, the X-Men continued their pre-season schedule at the McGill Redbird Classic in Montreal, with games versus the host Redbirds, UQAM Citadins and Toronto Varsity Blues.
Results were unavailable at press time.
“We have to continue to work on our ‘D’ – develop a defensive mentality,” the fifth-year senior said, when asked about keys to success for the X-Men.
He added the team also has to take advantage of its “veteran leadership.”
“We have four seniors in our starting five,” Bercy noted.
Fans will enjoy the invitational games in the recently-renovated Oland Centre, which includes new seating and playing surface – now called Coach K Court.
“We are definitely excited about that,” Bercy, the 2017 conference MVP, said.
“We want to play well for our fans and win.”

Winless trip
The basketball X-Women posted an 0-3 record at the recent Naismith Classic in Waterloo, including a 58-53 decision to the host Warriors.
In that match-up, Kendra Smith and freshman Kimberly Kingsbury led the X-Women with nine and eight points, respectively.
Samantha Minicucci and Chelsea Provo scored a team-high nine point apiece in a 60-43 loss to the York Lions.
In a 63-44 loss to Toronto, sophomore guard Jessica Miller led St. F.X., off the bench, with 10 points.
Over the weekend, the Blue and White also tipped-off at the McGill Redbird Classic against the host Redbirds, Queen’s Gaels and Varsity Blues.
Results were unavailable at press time.
The X-Women will conclude pre-season play, Sunday, Oct. 29 at Oland Centre, against the Holland College Hurricanes.
Game time is 2 p.m. at Oland Centre.
The X-Women and X-Men will begin Atlantic University Sport (AUS) regular season action Wednesday, Nov. 1, when they visit the Dalhousie Tigers.
