This year marks the 20th anniversary of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home Lights of Love campaign.
The seasonal fundraiser, put on by the R.K. MacDonald Foundation Board, helps support different projects and/or equipment around the nursing home and, this year, the campaign will go towards the second phase of the dementia-friendly Healing and Sensory Garden.
“This stage includes; installing a water and rock feature, seating and lighting, plant material and mulch and erecting a rustic cedar fence,” a campaign letter reads.
“Once complete, the garden will provide R.K. residents with access to a safe, secure outdoor space; equipped with a variety of sensory-stimulating features.”
Last year’s campaign supported the first phase of the garden.
“Humans have a spontaneous connection to our natural world; the garden is designed to provide a safe, accessible space where residents can interact with nature within the facility’s boundaries,” the letter stated.
“During this past summer, contractors cleared the ground, installed concrete walkways and initial amounts of soil, erected fencing and built two pergolas.”
Examples of previous projects supported by Lights of Love include; paraplegic shower, shower commode chair, Combi ovens, two floral light stands, six Thera rockers, six Heritage recliner and easy-lift chairs, mechanical lift slings, four season sunroom/greenhouse and onsite dental care facility.
The letter expresses appreciation to those who have given in the past while urging support for this year’s campaign.
“Please support us in our mission to make their [R.K. residents] daily experiences as rich and full as possible.”
The always powerful Lights of Love ceremony will take place on the evening of Dec. 3, a Sunday, starting at 7 p.m. in the R.K. Chapel.
