It wasn’t a very memorable Monctonian Hockey Tournament for either of the local major regional teams.
The tournament, which attracts teams from all over Atlantic Canada, as well as a few from Quebec and Ontario, took place Nov. 16 to 19.
The Cape Breton West (CBW) major midget Islanders posted a 1-2 record in their three games at the Monctonian, which started with a 3-1 loss to the TriPen Osprey from Newfoundland.
Matthew Ellis scored the Islanders’ lone goal with Sean Stewart picking up an assist on the marker.
Ewan MacDonald was in goal for CBW.
In their next game, versus the Fredericton Caps, veteran defensemen Jack Morris recorded a five-point game on a goal and four assists to help lead the Islanders to a 7-1 victory.
Team and Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League point leader Stephen Fox scored twice for CBW in the victory, while rookie Dell Welton picked up three assists.
Calum MacPherson had a goal and assist in the win while Matthew Ellis, Chase Ellis and Matthew Raike each recorded a goal, and Darren Waterman and Luke Hadley each added an assist.
MacDonald picked up the win in goal for CBW.
In their final game, the Islanders were topped 5-1 by the Ontario Hockey Academy U-18 team.
Raike, from Hadley, scored for the Islanders while MacDonald was in goal.
Over the Nov. 25-26 weekend, the Islanders were back in league action hosting the Halifax McDonald’s in Port Hood (results unavailable at press time). This Saturday (Dec. 2), they face-off against league-leading Steele Subaru of Dartmouth; a 7:15 p.m. puck drop at the Sportsplex.
Steele Subaru won this year’s Monctonian midget division by defeating Halifax in the final.
The Novas major bantam hockey team went 0-3 at the Monctonian, starting with a 4-1 loss, Nov. 16, versus the North West Bulls from the Woodstock area of New Brunswick.
Trey Sturge scored the Novas’ goal, assisted by Landyn Pitts.
Kenzie MacPhail was in goal for the Novas.
In their next game, the Novas were defeated by their Nova Scotia rivals, the ACA Rangers, 7-2.
Lowell MacDonald and Ryan Digout scored for the Novas with Brody McLaren, Kaber MacNeil and Liam Berthiaume picking up assists.
Brandon Connors was in goal for the Novas.
The local team was shutout in their final game, a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Prince County Warriors, from Prince Edward Island.
MacPhail was back in goal for the Novas.
Back in league action Nov. 25 and 26, the Novas were on the road to face the Rangers and league-leading, and Monctonian champion, Gulls, from the St. Margaret’s Bay area (results unavailable at press time).
The Novas are home this weekend with action at the Antigonish Arena on Saturday (Dec. 2), at 5 p.m., where they take on the Bedford Barons; and on Sunday in Port Hawkesbury, for a 12:30 p.m. face-off, versus the Western Hurricanes.
