On the strength of four goals in the final seven minutes of regulation time, including a pair from Josh Cunningham, the Bulldogs skated to an 8-5 victory over the visiting Cumberland County Blues in recent Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League action.
Cunningham finished with five points, including a hat-trick, while Taylor Leger found the back of the net three times and added one assist, in the Nov. 26 match-up at the Antigonish Arena.
Leger scored an unassisted tally, but the Blues led 2-1 after the first period.
Early in the second period, Ryan Kennedy – from Logan DeYoung and Patrik MacIsaac – tied the contest.
After the Blues regained a one-goal edge, Leger – from Connor Fraser and Cunningham – with the latter tallying, unassisted, gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead heading to the third period.
After the visitors pulled even and regained the lead in the final 20 minutes, DeYoung of the Bulldogs – from Cunningham and captain Brian MacDougall – tied it 5-5.
Two more markers from Cunningham, including the game-winner, with assists going to Declan Murphy, MacIsaac and Leger, gave the Bulldogs a 7-5 lead.
Leger – from Fraser – finished the scoring with an empty-netter.
Jensen made 15 saves for the Bulldogs.
Two nights earlier (Nov. 24), Antigonish dropped a 6-2 decision to the host East Hants Penguins.
The Bulldogs trailed by four goals after two periods.
After the Penguins went up 5-0 in the third period, Kennedy put the Bulldogs on the board, on assists from DeYoung and Dylan MacLean.
The teams traded goals in the final five minutes, with Giordano Saputo of the Bulldogs tallying on helpers from MacLean and DeYoung.
Jensen made 35 saves in the loss.
Antigonish wrapped up a three-game-in-four-night schedule, Nov. 27, with a 5-1 setback to the Sackville Blazers.
On the power play, Devin MacLaughlin scored an unassisted goal, while Braden Henwood made 13 saves.
The Bulldogs garnered 37 shots on goal.
Back in action
The Bulldogs were back on the ice against the Junior Miners (Dec. 1) and Blues (Dec. 3), with results unavailable at press time.
Antigonish will visit the Brookfield Elks Thursday (Dec. 7) and host the defending league champion Pictou County Scotians Friday (Dec. 8), at the Antigonish Arena.
