Weaver honoured for ‘outstanding work ethic’

A pair of Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional Royals Division 1 girls’ basketball players received awards during the 12th annual Mabel Arsenault Memorial Basketball Tournament, presented by Robertson Electrical. The host Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional Royals Division 1 girls’ basketball team finished third in the 12th annual Mabel Arsenault Memorial Basketball Tournament, presented by Robertson Electrical.
In the third-place game, Dec. 2, at the Regional gym, the Royals edged the Riverview Royals 53-51.
Guard Jessie Weaver – her team’s player of the game – led the Regional with 15 points, while chipping in five rebounds.
Sophie Milner and Lauren Lowther scored 13 and nine points, respectively, while Briar MacDonald corralled a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Royals opened round robin action, Dec. 1, in the two-day, six-team tournament with a 66-62 come-from-behind victory over the Memorial Marauders.
Weaver finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Lauren Lowther – the Royals’ player of the game – garnered a double-double, 13 points and 12 rebounds.
MacDonald added 10 points and seven rebounds.
In their second match-up of the day, the Royals dropped a 71-52 decision to the Citadel Phoenix, the eventual tournament champions.
Weaver, once again, led the Royals with 19 points and eight rebounds, while MacDonald – the player of the game – finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
Sophie Milner, with 12, scored in double figures.
Weaver was the recipient of the Mabel Arsenault Memorial Award, which recognizes a Royals’ player for her ‘outstanding work ethic.’
MacDonald earned a tournament all-star nod.
In a Metro area match-up, the Phoenix edged the Dartmouth High Spartans, 55-49, in the championship game.
The Royals will be back on the court this weekend – Dec. 16 and 17 – when they participate in the North Nova Gryphons’ tournament in New Glasgow.
