Bulldogs busy in minor hockey action

There was plenty of action on the Antigonish Arena ice on the morning of Dec. 16, as advanced novice programs from Antigonish and Pictou County faced-off. Richard MacKenzie

Antigonish Minor Hockey Association teams are busy battling rivals from across the province as the 2017-18 hockey season is well into its first period of action.
Midget ‘A’
In a home-and-home series with Cumberland over the Dec. 16-17 weekend, Antigonish Midget ‘A’ Bulldogs came up with a split.
After Cumberland recorded a 1-0 victory Dec. 16 at the Keating Centre, the Bulldogs bounced back with a 3-1 win at the Amherst Stadium, Dec. 17.
Scorers in the contest were; Jesse tenBrinke assisted by Brody Venedam, Ben Broussard assisted by Nolan MacPhee, and MacPhee on an unassisted effort.
Adam Tkacz picked up the win for Antigonish.
Bantam ‘A’
The Antigonish Bantam ‘A’ Bulldogs earned a pair of wins over the Pictou County Crushers during the same weekend, which stretched their lead atop the Fundy-Highland Division to 12 points.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs skated to a 3-2 win at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
Kieran MacDonald scored a pair of goals for the Bulldogs, while Mitchell Arsenault added a single.
Brett Boyd earned the win in goal.
Sunday, the Bulldogs outscored the Crushers 4-2 at the Antigonish Arena.
Jesse MacDonald recorded a hat-trick, with Kieran MacDonald rounding out the scoring.
Tkacz, the same goaltender from the Midget ‘A’ team, earned his fifth win of the season in goal for the bantam Bulldogs.
Midget ‘AA’
Like their ‘A’ counterparts, the Antigonish Midget ‘AA’ Bulldogs played a two-game series over the weekend, earning a split versus the Sydney Steelers. Unlike the ‘A’ team, both games were played in Antigonish.
At the Antigonish Arena late Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs slipped by the Steelers by the narrow score of 2-1.
Antigonish goals were scored by Peter Bekkers, assisted by Caden McLaren and Ben Boudreau, and John Brophy unassisted.
Owen MacDonald was in the net for the win.
At the KMC Sunday morning, Sydney won the game by a score of 6-3.
Scoring for the Bulldogs were Brophy with two goals and Robbie Miller with one.
Miller also recorded an assist and other helpers were earned by Bekkers and Boudreau.
Bantam A Girls
The Antigonish Bantam ‘A’ girl Bulldogs played two games, Dec. 17, in Cape Breton.
In their first game, played in Dominion, the Bulldogs won 9-1 over Glace Bay.
Lauren Starzomski and Allie Gilfoy each recorded hat-tricks with single goals coming off the sticks of Mairinn Kennedy, Jia Rennie and Maggie Broussard. Kennedy also picked up three assists in the contest.
In their second game, also against Glace Bay and played in Membertou, Antigonish won 5-0.
Gilfoy scored twice with single markers coming from Kaylee Connors, Rennie and Danielle Waterman.
Kaylee Connors added two assists and Maddy Fraser earned the shutout in goal for the Bulldogs.
Atom ‘A’
The Atom ‘A’ Bulldogs played Truro, Dec. 10 in Antigonish, and lost a close contest 3-2.
Scoring for the Bulldogs were Ben Kavanaugh and Thomas MacEachern.
