MIDDLE RIVER — Road crews are re-evaluating a repaving project after a portion of the Middle River West Road collapsed this week.

Media relations advisor for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, Marla MacInnis, said there was a slope failure during reconstruction of the road shoulder.

“We are evaluating the issue now with the Department of Environment and technical experts in order to properly determine the required repair method,” said MacInnis.

“Once that has been determined, we’ll have a better sense of the timeline for repair.”

Area residents believe the collapse is related to a lack of maintenance on the roadway, citing the department’s failure to replace a decades-old culvert.

MacInnis the department is now assessing the issue with the Department of Environment and other technical experts to determine its best repair option.

To ensure the safety of motorists, a section of the road will be closed within the next few days and a detour route established. In the meantime, the road has been reduced to one lane and has 24-hour traffic control in place.
