With Family Literacy Day Jan. 27, organizers of the annual Fit-4-Lit run/walk are taking the time to remind everyone the event will be held April 22 this year.
This will be the second year for Fit-4-Lit which enjoyed a successful debut last year with more than 150 participants raising more than $6,000.
The funds enabled the Antigonish County Adult Learning Association (ACALA) to offer summer programming at the People’s Place Library in Antigonish.
“It was the first time they were able to offer some of their programming in the summer,” Shirlyn Aker, Fit-4-Lit volunteer, said.
Fit-4-Lit offers a five or 10 kilometre course which participants can walk, run or push, as in wheelchairs or strollers, their way around.
Organizers welcome the participation of families or individuals and all proceeds go towards ACALA’s adult learning initiatives in Antigonish town and county.
Aker talked about the appropriateness of an athletic event supporting learning initiatives.
“It’s all about well-being and whether it’s literacy or physical fitness, it all promotes overall well being,” she said.
Aker said goals for this year are to raise $10,000 so ACALA can, “continue with the summer programs and be able to offer maybe a few other programs throughout the year.”
She noted the event is similar to one staged in Moncton called Legs for Literacy which has grown significantly since it debuted in 2000.
“I took part in the run this year and they (Legs for Literacy) had around 1,800 people. Those are long terms goals but hopefully that’s where we’re headed,” Aker said.
“We’re starting small and building but even just being able to offer some summer programs for the residents of Antigonish town and county that was a good start for our first year.”
