A late surge propelled Rev. H.J. MacDonald students and teachers over the St. F.X. football team in a charity basketball game Thursday.
Grade 5 and 6 students and a handful of teachers pulled out a 52-48 win over the X-Men. The game raised $300 for Red Cross relief in Haiti.
“In the second half, they just took over,” X-Men defensive lineman and one-time power forward Daniel McLeish said.
      “It was intense.”
The X-Men were hot out of the gates, pulling ahead to an early lead before some clutch H.J. MacDonald three-pointers closed the gap.
“It was fun playing against the St. F.X. players,” modest Heatherton student Brent Chisholm said. “I didn’t really think we were going to win because they were so tall.”
Chisholm – who scored four baskets during the game – attributed the win to his teachers, who provided some points in the paint.
The students benefitted from some questionable calls from guest referee and X-Men football coach Gary Waterman.
“I think he called a fair game,” McLeish said. “Maybe a little biased to the students, but fair.”
Rev. H.J. MacDonald principal David Bance talked a big game before the opening whistle.
“We’ll draw for prizes after the game, that is if [the football players] aren’t crying,” he said.
The game was also part of the school’s Positive Behaviour Effective Support (PEBS) program, which re-wards students for their actions.
“This is in recognition of how good you are,” Bance said to the students who were excused from class to watch the game.
Bance said he’d make sure the money donated to the Red Cross would go toward helping school-aged children in Haiti.
