Women will take centre stage at an upcoming community gathering to mark International Women’s Day.
The Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre (AWRC) will host a local celebration on Sunday, Mar. 8, from 2-4 p.m., at Saint Andrew Junior School.
“We really wanted to focus on a celebration of women – their creativity – and everything they do to make the world a better place for women and girls,” AWRC’s Wyanne Sandler said.
The creativity and skills of local women will be on display, including music, dancing (including a workshop), crafting and storytelling. There will also be a Kids’ Corner for the youngsters.
“We have received a great response. There are a number of young woman who are going to show their musical talents,” Sandler said.
Organizers are encouraging people with a creative skill to come out and show their talents. People who want to learn a new skill are also invited to take part.
It is an opportunity for women and children to get together with some of the great women in the community and have fun.
“We expect it to be a great day,” Sandler said.
The national theme for International Women’s Day is “Strong Leadership, Strong Women, Strong World = Equality” for International Women’s Week from March 2-8.
Each year during International Women’s Week, Canadians celebrate progress toward equality for women and their full participation, reflect on the current challenges and consider future steps in achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives.
“For Canadians, equality means women and men sharing in the responsibilities and obligations, as well as in the opportunities and rewards, of life and work,” Helena Guergis, federal Minister of State (Status of Women), said on Feb. 27 at the unveiling of the 2009 theme and poster.
“In Canada, leadership is a key across society – from the private sector, to governments, to the general public – for people of all origins, generations and backgrounds to participate fully in our country’s economic, social and democratic life, and, ultimately, in improving the state of the world.”
Along with the International Women’s Day celebration, the AWRC will host a conference later in March in conjunction with the St. F.X. Women’s Studies department.
