CLARENVILLE, N.L. — With a federal ban on single-use plastics coming in the near future, one Clarenville business is already providing options for consumers who want to help the environment.
The Health Hut offers acupuncture and medical aesthetics, like laser treatment and other services.
Open for almost two years, owner and acupuncturist Victoria Burry told The Packet they’ve begun to offer refillable soap products, reducing the number of plastic bottles discarded when bought in disposable containers.
Burry says they can sell refillable glass containers for soap, shampoo, conditioner and more, or customers can bring their own glass containers.
Rachel D’Entremont, who does medical aesthetics at the Health Hut, adds products are also organic, hypoallergenic and made in Canada through Oneka in Quebec. They’ve even started to make their own Health Hut products.
“The purpose is to eliminate waste,” says D’Entremont.
Burry says they’ve decided what types of products to offer, based on different recipes that are safe and useful.
Both are moms who have seen the importance of teaching their kids – and having their kids tell them – ways to be environmentally responsible.
“It’s 100-per-cent woman operated; we all come from different backgrounds, we’re all moms, so I think we bring to the table a very unique set of characteristics for a business,” says Burry.
“When we see things like this … if you can do it in your home, I think, as a business, you have a responsibility to carry that over as well.”
Reusable straws, biodegradable toothbrushes and refillable bottles are at the heart of what they’re doing.
D’Entremont says this is the way many people are moving now, with local establishments catching up with the rest of Canada.
They’re also offering the products at the Farm and Market in Clarenville this summer.
