NEW GLASGOW, N.S. —  The groundwork for a Starbucks in New Glasgow has been laid.
The location is in the Aberdeen Shopping Centre off East River Road.
Frank MacFarlane, business development officer for the Town of New Glasgow and Municipality of Pictou County, said if the location was supposed to be a secret, it’s been the worst-kept secret.
Starbucks corporate will be running the location, rather than a franchisee.
In March 2018, Greg Burrows, who owns the Pictou County Subway franchise locations, had said he was planning to open a Starbucks location adjacent to his Subway location on East River Road. At the time he had anticipated opening it in the fall of 2018. Starbucks pulled out of the deal, however, and Burrows ended up taking them to small claims court for $25,000, alleging bad faith dealings. Burrows lost the case which was heard March 20, 2019 in Pictou court, however.
In his written decision, adjudactor Raffi A. Balmanoukian said that “the best I can say in favour of the Claimants is that they “heard what they wanted to hear” and proceeded in that fashion.”
He said that the conversations that Burrows had with Brendan Hardee, who is the region’s business development manager, did not constitute a promise that the deal would be finalized.
“At the end of the day, the claimants knew that despite his position with Starbucks, the final say was not his, and those who did have that say had not yet signed off either figuratively or literally,” Balmanoukian stated.
The new Starbucks location will be across the street and just down the road from East River Road Subway.
