ARISAIG, ANTIGONISH COUNTY - An invitation into the Hall of Fame came early for one Canadian distiller.

After years of winning national and international competitions, Arisaig, Antigonish County-based Steinhart Distillery catapulted itself to new heights this past week by being awarded the Best Classic Gin in the World at the 2019 World Gin Awards in London, England.

Steinhart Distillery will join a small, elite group of producers from around the world who have been awarded this honour over the years.

“The best part of this award is that I won world’s best gin while competing against the best of the best, from across countries and gin categories,” Thomas Steinhart, owner and operator, said.

“It’s like winning against Tom Brady at the Super Bowl or Tom Hanks at the Oscars. You know you deserve it, but you’re also incredibly aware that you’re standing among legends. That’s what makes this award so meaningful – to myself, my staff and to our customers.”

The World Gin Awards competition included 20 international judges and selected gins were judged on ‘best of’ in each category, as well as each country.

On top of winning world’s best classic gin, Steinhart Distillery also won Best Canadian Gin which came as no surprise to Steinhart following success on the international stage.

This multi award-winning gin has paved the way for Steinhart Distillery in the past. In 2018, the Steinhart gin helped the distillery be accepted into the London Gin Guild as the first and only distiller from North America and its special edition blue bottles are a fan favourite among customers across continents.

Steinhart Distillery also continues to expand its efforts outside of North America, including in Europe and Asia, where international customers can’t get enough of the Steinhart classic gin and maple vodka.

To celebrate these awards, Steinhart Distillery will be hosting events in Antigonish and Halifax in the near future, as well as launching a social media contest as thanks to the distillery’s longtime customers and fans. The winner of the contest will be invited to the distillery for an all-expense paid trip to learn more about the distilling process, savour the products and meet the team.
