ANTIGONISH, N.S. —

Summer is here, and with it comes one of the many celebrations that coincide with it. Chisholm Park is poised to become a cultural hub in its own right for much of the summer, with tents food, fellowship – and above all, some good art.

The Antigonish Art Fair’s first iteration of 2019 will be taking place this Friday (June 28), and every second Friday, until Aug. 23 (dates: June 28, July 12 and 26 and Aug. 9 and 23). This year’s art fairs will follow the same format as those of the previous five summers.

“We will have tents and gazebos set up in the park, where emerging and established artists and artisans will be featured,” Beth Latwaitis, a member of, and spokesperson for the Antigonish Art Fair, said.

The event will feature a variety of artwork, artisanal goods and food for purchase, along with performance art onstage at the Chisholm Park gazebo. The fairs are free to attend.

This year’s Art Fair, while still very much a celebration of local talent, will be “tinged with sadness,” Latwaitis noted, since this will be the first art fair without David Miller, who passed away Nov 1, 2018, at the helm.

Miller will not be forgotten, she said, adding that the Town of Antigonish has commissioned a commemorative bench to be placed in Chisholm Park to honour his memory.

“It was David’s vision to have an established art fair,” Latwaitis said. “He was always coming up with a new idea how to make this community a more wonderful place to live. He will be sorely missed.”

In addition to plenty of artwork, Latwaitis noted there will also be vendors and food trucks at each event.

“As with every first art fair, there will be time during the evening – at approximately 7 p.m. – when the local town and county dignitaries will take to the stage to deliver remarks on the importance of art in the surrounding community,” Latwaitis said.

The Antigonish Art Fair is an all-ages event, information on the event website states, “so there will be something for every member of the family.”

The art fair will happen, rain or shine. If extreme weather does dampen the possibility of an outdoor art fair, any rescheduling or venue changes will be announced on radio and social media by 2 p.m. the day of.
