ANTIGONISH, N.S. - Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke … artists who define Motown and soul music.
Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre is pleased to present a musical evening at the Bauer Theatre Saturday, Feb. 23, titled Motown and Beyond: An Evening of Classic Rhythm & Blues.
This is a one-night show and tickets are going fast. The Whiskysmoke Blues Band, a local rhythm-and-blues band will perform a selection of music from the classic catalogue of the famous Detroit Motown label, as well as soul sounds from the history of the rich tradition of rhythm and blues music.
Band members include Jake Hanlon, Mike Melchin, Ryan Billington, Carl Laudadio, and Allan Fraser; and along with the above mentioned artists and bands, more contemporary artists such as Steely Dan and Huey Lewis and the News will be featured.
“The music is guaranteed to be the music you’ve heard as far back as you can remember, with original arrangements and recreations of some of the most classic popular music that there is to offer,” a release from Festival Antigonish states.
The show starts at 8 p.m., with doors and the bar opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at tickets.festivalantigonish.com or by calling the box office at 902-867-3333.
A similar concert by the Whiskysmoke Blues Band last year featured a tribute to English guitar legend Eric Clapton, and resulted in a sold-out show. This year, the band will be joined with a full set of backing singers and more.
All proceeds raised from the event will support the professional summer theatre productions presented on the Bauer stage, by Festival Antigonish.
“We are looking forward to this musical evening,” Festival Antigonish managing director Reema Fuller said.
“The Whiskysmoke Blues Band is incredibly talented and well-loved, and we are so grateful for their support for the theatre. They are going to bring the legendary magic of Motown and beyond to our stage and I know it’s going to be a night to remember.
“Get your tickets early and make it a date night with your friends and loved ones.”
