ANTIGONISH, N.S. - Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia is running a winter clothing drive until Dec. 22; to help community members stay warm this winter season.
“As winter approaches, we hope to provide community members in need with some of the most basic necessities for the season.” Avery Carter, sexual violence prevention and supports program co-ordinator for Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia, as well as program navigator for the Men’s Health Centre, wrote in an email response to the Casket, about the drive.
“Once this is accomplished, then this presents avenues that were not a possibility before; whether that be a child who is now able to go play outside with friends, someone hoping to gain employment yet feels immense shame without requisite clothing, or an elderly community member who will be without adequate heating this upcoming month. No matter the situation, our goal is to equip community members for their own context — meeting them where they are.”
Carter added it is then other concerns can be addressed and long-term solutions can be achieved.
“For example, in the noted scenarios, this may include moving forward with funding applications for a child to participate in extracurricular activities, helping a community member complete and submit job applications, or assisting an elderly community member navigate funding systems for heating, where possible.”
Ron MacGillivray Chevrolet Buick GMC, on St. Andrews Street in Antigonish, is supporting the drive by providing a drop-off bin at the dealership as well as providing a monetary donation with every vehicle purchased, new or used, from Dec. 1 to 22.
A donation bin has also been set up at the People’s Place Library on Main Street in Antigonish; as well as the family services office, also on Main Street (275, suite 103).
“All donations, for both adults and children, are appreciated,” Carter wrote.
“We are absolutely thrilled about these partnerships, as well as the community support that we have received so far. Thank you for helping community members stay warm this winter season, and if you haven’t already, don’t forget to donate.”
