ANTIGONISH, N.S. - The 2017-18 season for the Maureen Fraser School of Dance (MFSD) has officially ended on a high note.
Dance team members, aged seven to 18, competed in three competitions within the Maritimes, and won several top awards.
Team coaches and members of the STFX dance team, Jeanine Philpott, Sam Cochrane, Kylie MacNeil and Audrey Cochrane, brought their expertise in the competition world to the MFSD team; three of which have been competing for more than 10 years.
Dancers were prepared with an intense and comprehensive regime of conditioning, strengthening, technique and more.
Some competition highlights of the inaugural year included overall and special awards in their age division. Results included:
Thunderstruck Competition (awards system; bronze, silver, high silver, gold, high gold, lightening gold and platinum thunder)
Platinum Thunder and 1st place overall - Audrey Cochrane
Platinum Thunder and 2nd place overall - Amaya Benoit
Lightening Gold and 8th place overall - senior team
High Gold and 10th place overall - Dana Stoffer
High Gold and 10th place overall - Sarah Penney
Gold and 10th place overall - junior team
Elite Competition (awards system; bronze, silver, high silver, gold, high gold and elite gold)
High Gold and 3rd place overall - Elise Thomson
High Gold, 6th place overall and an entry to the showdown - Amaya Benoit
Limelight Competition (awards system; bronze, silver, gold, and exclusive gold)
Two Golds, a special award for highest potential of a new group and highest mark for novice Jazz - intermediate team
Gold, an award for highest mark for Lyrical, and an entry in the final showcase - Amaya Benoit
Parents and guardians, of new and returning dancers, are encouraged to attend a detailed information session, regarding all dance team particulars, Friday, June 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Maureen Fraser School of Dance.
The Summer Intensive will run from July 2 to 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, for beginner to advanced levels, ages 6 to 19.
Placement auditions will take place on July 6, the last day of the Summer Intensive, for the 2018-19 season. Dancers age six and up to and including 19, beginner to advanced levels, are welcome to audition. At the audition, dancers will be assessed to determine which team they would be best suited for.
Dance team training will begin in September.
