House "extensively" damaged in Sunday fire in Fairmont

Three departments respond to fire in Fairmont

FAIRMONT, N.S. —

A house fire on Triton Brook Road in Fairmont late Sunday afternoon kept four fire departments busy until around 10 p.m.

Antigonish Town Volunteer Fire Department was joined by Antigonish County Volunteer Department and Four Valleys Volunteer Fire Department while the St. Andrews Volunteer Fire Department stood ready to act on any calls while their colleagues were engaged in Fairmont.

“Extensive,” was the word Antigonish Town Fire Chief Bill Chisholm used the following morning in assessing the damage to the house. He noted the department receieved the call about the fire at 4:23 p.m.

Chisholm also reported there were “no serious” injuries during the incident, and when asked about the time it took to control the situation, noted where it started played a factor.

“It originated as a basement fire; those are all difficult to fight,” the veteran firefighter said.

As for an exact cause, Chisholm said it’s “undetermined” at this stage.

“The investigation is ongoing right now,” he said. “Between all the players at this point; the fire investigator, fire marshal office and the insurance company, they’re all still working on it.”
