A 37-year-old Kentville man is facing multiple charges after allegedly driving impaired with a child in the vehicle in Somerset on Monday afternoon.

At 4:27 p.m., Kings District RCMP received a call of a dangerous driver on Brooklyn Street, police said in a news release.

The caller told police a driver of a white van had nearly forced three vehicles off the road, hit a trailer attached to the back of a truck and then went off the road on the opposite side. The caller said there was also a child inside the van and believed the driver was impaired.

The suspect was attempting to leave the area with the child on foot when RCMP arrived on scene.

Officers noted signs of drug impairment from the suspect, who had suffered minor injuries. The child was assessed and taken to hospital for further examination for minor injuries.

The suspect was arrested, but resisted the officer's efforts to take him into custody, the release said, adding he damaged the police car and threatened police. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were found on the suspect when he was searched.

The man was held in custody overnight and is to appear in Kentville provincial court today. He is facing charges of impaired operation of a conveyance by a drug, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, uttering threats and mischief under $5,000.
