ANTIGONISH, N.S. — A pair of Antigonish friends spent the first day of their summer vacation thinking of – and giving back – to others.

Yashita Ghore and Emma Young – both 10 – with some help from friends and family hosted a fundraising yard sale June 29.

The youngsters raised more than $465 for seaturtles.org – an international group, as described on its website – that works to ‘organize the world’s sea turtle information and make it universally accessible and useful.’

“They have never hurt us, so why should we hurt them,” Yashita said.

Sea turtles face myriad obstacles, as the girls pointed out, including plastics choking their habitat and poachers.

“People even eat them,” Emma noted.

After watching a video by renowned scientist Bill Nye about sea turtles, the friends said they wanted to help.

The girls, who hope to have more awareness and fundraising campaigns, reminded people they can also do their part.

“Every little bit helps,” Yashita said.
