SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton-Victoria Centre for Education is for the second time this year looking to sell three former school properties.

Tenders have been issued for the sale of the former Thompson Middle School in North Sydney, Boisdale School and Florence Elementary School — the only site that has a building that remains standing is Florence Elementary.

Those three properties, along with Rankin Memorial School in Iona, first went up for sale in the spring. Rankin Memorial School is apparently the only one that sold. According to the provincial procurement website, it was sold through tender in the spring for $40,500.

The tenders for the three properties up for sale close Nov. 28.

The sites were placed for sale after they were declared surplus to the centre’s needs.

The minimum acceptable bid for Boisdale is now $25,000; Florence is $30,000; and Thompson is $80,000.

Earlier this year, Kevin Moules, the centre’s purchasing agent, said it was relatively unusual for so many former properties to be put up for sale at the same time.

Any bids received will be evaluated to see if they are compliant with the request for proposals.

Each property has a minimum acceptable bid listed.

Potential bidders are directed to contact the Cape Breton Regional Municipality or the Municipality of Victoria County for zoning and land use information.

The tender documents state that the centre for education made no warranties regarding the condition of the properties or any buildings on them, including the environmental condition of the properties and the existence of any hazardous materials.

Florence Elementary and Thompson Middle School closed in June 2017.

The Boisdale school closed in 1996. The property at one time had been the subject of an ownership dispute between the former regional school board and the CBRM. There had been numerous incidents of vandalism reported there prior to its demolition.
