ANTIGONISH, N.S. - The Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) added a little extra excitement to Valentine’s Day this year by choosing Feb. 14 as the day to launch their rebrand.
“Today, VON Canada celebrated the launch of a new vision, mission, and values, expressed through a new tagline - Live Every Day,” a release stated.
“VON’s new tagline, Live Every Day, recognizes that, regardless of one’s circumstances, every day has value, and everyone deserves to live each day to the fullest” Jo-Anne Poirier, VON president and chief executive officer, said.
“It’s also a promise we make to the people who share their day with us; that we will help them live each day to the fullest.”
She noted VON has been the “heart of home and community care” in Canada for 120 years.
“We founded homecare in Canada and are known as trailblazers and innovators,” Poirier said. “We have learned that it’s important to those we serve that we are a not-for-profit and charity; that strengthens trust.
“And we’ve also learned that the comfort we bring to those we work with is as important as the professional care. We have worked to ensure that our new brand reflects all of that.”
The release notes VON’s employees and volunteers contributed to the development of this new brand by participating in surveys and discussion groups.
In Antigonish, the new brand launch was celebrated with cake and free prize draws, just outside the VON office in Antigonish Market Square.

Olivia Rossong from the local VON noted it was a good opportunity to remind people of all the work VON does in the community; listing Meals on Wheels, the Adult Day program, Vial of Life, income tax clinic, Philips Lifeline and assisted transportation, as some of what is provided.
A volunteer as well as a participant in the adult day program talked about the benefits from just that one program, provided by VON.
“I decided to sign up to volunteer for the Adult Day program after chatting with one of the Meals on Wheels volunteers about their positive experience with VON,” Denise DeCoste said. “I always look forward to coming in; it’s an upbeat, optimistic environment and it gives me a sense of purpose.”
Participant John Kennedy also used the word “purpose.”
“I’ve been coming for years now,” he said. “I enjoy helping out and being around friends. It has given me a purpose and feels like family.”
