BARRINGTON, N.S. – A Shelburne County man facing charges of assault and aggravated assault has been remanded into custody until a show cause hearing in Shelburne provincial court on Jan. 16. He was arrested by the RCMP at his home on the Blanche Road on Jan. 10 and appeared briefly in Yarmouth provincial court on Jan. 14.
Grigorios Laberakis, 59, is facing charges of aggravated assault, four counts of assault with a weapon, assault, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, states an RCMP press release.
Barrington RCMP say they started an investigation on Jan. 9 into an assault that they say had occurred on Blanche Road. “The victim told police that he was driving past a home, when the suspect ran out of the home, confronted him, and while he was in his vehicle, head butted him and spat at him,” reads the release.
When the Barrington RCMP went to the residence to arrest the suspect in relation to the alleged assault, they say they were met outside by the Laberakis, who was carrying a walking staff. He dropped it when told to do so. Once advised he was under arrest, the suspect started to resist.
“During the struggle the suspect retrieved the staff and swung it at the police officers, striking one in the wrist and another in the head,” the release reads.
Police officers used a Taser and pepper spray to gain control of the suspect.
“This was done in an attempt to restrain the suspect from causing further harm to himself and others,” the RCMP say.
Once under control Laberakis and the two police officers who were injured were taken to hospital for examination.
The police officers sustained moderate injuries. They say the suspect was not injured.
