Funeral service for the late Alice Jane Brophy, 92, Antigonish, was held July 14 in St. Ninian Cathedral with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating, assisted by Fathers Gary MacPherson and Elliot O’Neal. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Brophy died July 10, 2018, at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home. Readers at the funeral Mass were Tracey MacDonald, Tammy Brophy and Shawn Albert Brophy. Ethan Van den Heuval, Sean MacDonald, Anna Ross and Josie Hudson presented the offertory gifts. Eucharistic ministers were Kathy Farrell and Roy Lawlor. Music was provided by Ty Wallace, Ambrose Wallace, Brenda Berkvens and fiddler Stephen Wallace. American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter was Monica Lewis Clarke. Pallbearers were Danny MacDonald, Willie Bowman, Martin Van den Heuval, Patrick Van den Heuval, Dylan Brophy and Roddie MacDonald. Born in Glencoe, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Nellie (Quirk) Farrell. In her early years, she worked for Wilkie & Cunningham in Antigonish and the St. F.X. Bookstore. A loving mother and grandmother, she loved cards, bingo, dancing and sewing; she had knitted many wool socks over the years. Prior to his passing, she also cared for her husband, Martin, for six years, before he went to a nursing home. She is survived by two sons, Finley (Vivian), Shawn (Maria), both of Antigonish; five daughters, Annette (Joe) Hanifen, Erinville; Margie (Eddie) MacDonald, Heatherton; Heather (Cornelius) Van den Heuval, Upper South River; Trudy (John) Bowman, Afton; Donna Brophy (Archie Tate), Dunmore; 24 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Clarence (Mary Kate), Lanark; Gus (Maureen), Floyd (Patsy), Hughie (Colleen), all of Antigonish; three sisters-in-law, Marge Farrell, Antigonish; Florence Farrell, St. Andrews; Joni Bradbury, Edmonton; brother-in-law, Huntley Brophy, South Side Harbour; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Martin; seven brothers Greg (Helen), Doug (Mary), James (Kay), Art, Lewis, Joe Day, baby Finley; two sisters, Lydia Vincent (Joe), Marcella Farrell (James); two sisters-in-law, Helen Brophy and Louise Fraser; two special children, Patrick and Bonnie O’Hearn; two nieces, Debbie Brophy, Beverley Rennie; nephew, Bobby Farrell.
