Blenda Derby

Funeral service for the late Mary ‘Blenda’ (MacGillivray) Derby, 80, was held December 13 in St. Columba Church, Lakevale, with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Derby died November 27, 2019, in the palliative care unit of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home.

Readers at the funeral Mass were Shirley Brown, John Boyd and Vera Nicholson. Joanie Carr and Helen MacEachern presented the offertory gifts. Eucharistic minister was Mary June Brown. Music was provided by Ty Wallace.

Urn bearer was Marjorie Chisholm.

Born October 17, 1939, in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Ester (MacInnis) MacGillivray. She grew up in North Lakevale and was a babysitter for various families in the Antigonish area for a number of years. She moved to Massachusetts, where she worked for Irving B. Moore Corp. in Cambridge for approximately 20 years. It was there she met her husband, and, when the plant closed, they returned to Antigonish. Card games and bingo were two of her favorite forms of entertainment.

She is survived by three sisters, Marjorie Chisholm, Mary (Rollie) Uloth, Rita (Pat) Sole; two brothers, Joe (Sue) Moore, Douglas Thompson.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Derby; two brothers, Donald (Jean) and John R. MacGillivray.
