CHRISTENA MARY MACCALDER

Funeral service for the late Christena Mary MacCalder, 92, Orangedale, Inverness County, was held August 24 in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh with Reverend Bob Lyle and Reverend Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial was in Gillis Cove Cemetery, Orangedale.

Mrs. MacCalder died August 18, 2019, in Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.

Born in Inverness, she was a daughter of the late John Dan and Breadahlane Isabelle (MacDonald) MacKinnon. She worked as a housekeeper prior to her marriage. For much of her life she was a homemaker, raising her family, while also working at the post office part-time. She was a member of the Orangedale Presbyterian Church, where she later became an elder and served as clerk of session until the loss of her eyesight. She was a life member of the Atlantic Mission Society, a member of the Women’s Mission Society, Orangedale Home and School and the Orangedale Improvement Association. She enjoyed knitting and baking.

She is survived by three sons, Gussie (Donna), Lexington; Ian (Kathy), Orangedale; Dale, Vancouver; daughter, Margaret (Kent) Holliday, Scarborough, Ontario; daughter-in-law, Jean MacCalder, Halifax; brother, Frederick (Mary) MacKinnon, Ashfield; sister-in-law, Jessie MacKinnon, Baddeck; 13 grandchildren, John Glenn, Allan, Alexis, Natalie, William, Michael, Frank, Danny, Nadine, Mary, Jonathan, Luke, Simon; 17 great-grandchildren, Joseph, Josh, Gerry-Lynn, Keigan, Brendan, Kaylee, Mar-Lee, Courtney, Lily, Emma, Liam, Christena, Eva, Wilder, Vienna, Ebbony, Harmony; great-great-granddaughter, Brextynn; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Duncan; two sons, Frank, Sandy; daughter, Ena MacIver; two stillborn children; sister, Bessie Robbins; two brothers, Dan Hughie, Charles.

Memorial donations may be made to Gillis Cove Cemetery or St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh.
