Daniel Bernard ‘Bernie’ Layes

Funeral service for the late Daniel Bernard ‘Bernie’ Layes, 82, Merland, Antigonish County, was held November 28 in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie, with Father John Barry officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.     

Mr. Layes died November 25, 2019, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.     

Readers at the funeral Mass were Valerie Pettipas and Pearl Kelly. Sheena Halfpenny, Daniel Halfpenny and Rebecca Wile presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Tracey Wallace.     

Pallbearers were James Wallace, Billy Wallace, Garrett Breen, Francis Boyle, Johnie Layes and Bobby Layes.     

Born November 1, 1937, in Fairmont, he was the son of the late Daniel and Margaret (Cameron) Layes. He started his working career as a forester and trucker and had a contract with the pulp mill for more than 40 years. He was an avid race fan and enjoyed sports.     

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ethel (Breen); three children, Darlene (Mike) Halfpenny, Pleasant Valley; Donnie, Afton; Susan (Hugh) Chisholm, Afton; three grandchildren, Sheena Halfpenny (Andrew MacDougall), Daniel Halfpenny, Rebecca (Brandon) Wile; two great-grandchildren, Leyera, Jasper; five brothers, Francis, Billy, Melvin, Jimmy, Berkley; sister, Aileen; brother-in-law, Bob MacLean.     

He was predeceased by granddaughter, Katrina Halfpenny; eight siblings, John, Lawrence, Laura MacLean, Alex, Danny, Alec, Mary, Carol.
