Funeral service for the late Derek Shannon Spears, 47, was held January 28 in Saint Peter’s Church, Port Hood, with Father Vincent vanZutphen and Father Eugene Morris officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Mr. Spears died January 20, 2019, in the Halifax Infirmary QE11. Born December 31, 1971, he was a son of Lloyd and Diane Spears. He especially enjoyed Christmas time and his dad’s turkey dinners and spent his birthday preparing a huge New Year’s feast. He was a third-generation fisherman, captain of the Charity Christine out of Murphy’s Pond, Port Hood. He was also the successful owner of D&M Mobile Burgers ‘the Bus’. He was a devoted member of the Port Hood & Area Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter and medical first responder, until his health started to fail. He also served on the boards of the Ceilidh Fishermen’s Co-op and the Harbour Authority of Port Hood. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Marie; sister, Sheri (Tony); nephew, Reg; niece, Shea; parents-in-law, John and Julia; brother-in-law, Darrell (Sue); uncles, aunts, cousins.
