Dick Glencross
Funeral service for the late Richard James ‘Dick’ Glencross, 78, Antigonish, was held June 28 in St. Ninian Cathedral, with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating, assisted by Reverend Sue Channen. Mr. Glencross died June 24, 2019, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. Readers at the funeral Mass were Bernadette Richard and Ned Connors. Gracie Glencross and Sawyer Glencross presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Emery Van de Wiel, Diane MacNeil and Vivian Doiron. Active pallbearers were Richard Glencross, Bob Glencross, John Glencross, Colin Glencross, Troy Glencross and Jack Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Ned Connors, Emery McKenna, Peter Kontak, Glenn Russell, Paul Doiron and Archie MacIsaac. Members of Antigonish Volunteer Fire Department formed an honour guard. Born September 7, 1940, in Washington, DC, he was the son of late Wilfred Walter and Evelyn Rudge (Adams) Glencross. He was proprietor of the Cottage Store Restaurant and Catering for more than 40 years. He was especially proud of his long service to the students of St. Francis Xavier University. His routine and business picked up each fall with the arrival of football training camp. He had many fond memories of his interaction with students, many of whom he employed during their time in Antigonish. He was an avid sports fan, and his love of the outdoors was evident to all who embraced his company. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was also a man who led by quiet example. His long service and leadership of 34 years with the Antigonish Fire Department is one example of his dedication to his community. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty; four sons, John, Montreal; Richard (Karen), Bangor, Maine; Robert, Bamfield, British Columbia; Troy (Angela), St. Andrews; daughter, Karen (Glenn Russell), New Ross; seven grandchildren, Lily Ann, Fort McMurray, Alberta; Jack, Antigonish; Morgan, Portland, Maine; Colin, Bangor, Maine; Robert, Arizona; Gracie, Antigonish; Sawyer, Antigonish; two sisters, Roberta Wittstock, Antigonish; Patricia (Joe) Christie, Dartmouth.
