DOLORES CASEY

Dolores Casey

Funeral service for the late Dolores Casey, 81, Glendale, Cape Breton, was held July 29 in St. Mary of the Angels, Glendale, with Reverend Duncan officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Casey died July 19, 2019, in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax.

Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Niel and Josephine (MacNeil) Harrietha. After being raised for most of her childhood in Glendale, she devoted herself to the Roman Catholic Church as a nun with the Sisters of Service. She was stationed across the country to help others, including at Pier 21 in Halifax to greet new Canadians. She left the order and married Francis Casey of Edmonton, Alberta. They moved to Sarnia, Ontario, as school teachers and began a lifelong dedication to children. While adopting seven children and giving birth to two, she continued a full career as an elementary teacher across the city. Once retired, she returned to Glendale and spent her retirement years spearheading countless projects, including craft, quilting, weaving, and gardening clubs for community members. She enjoyed Gaelic, the Cape Breton fiddle, square dancing, songs of Cape Breton and ceilidhs.

She is survived by nine children, James (Linda) Love, Bruce (Jan) Casey, Doug Casey, Charlene Casey, Mary (John) Meadows, April (Henry) Demooy, Beverley-Jean (Trevor) Lafont, Aylene (Brian) Gracie, Andrew (Beverly) Casey; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Christine, Andrew, Jamie, Shelby Dawnn, Kember, Holly Anne, Kevin, Ian, Eric, Meaghan, Erin, Rachel, Cameron, Keely, Ashley, Alexander, Laura, Daniel, Nathan, Ana, Madison, Mackenzie, Lily, Koda, Kash, Kayden, Noah, Genevieve, Brookelynn, Bowden, Payge, Peityn; three sisters, Cecilia Kelly, Alma Murphy, Sarah Cameron.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Casey; two brothers, Aloysius ‘Wish’ Harrietha, Ronald Harrietha; two sisters, Mary ‘Carmelita’ MacDonald, Reynelda Young.

Memorial donations may be made to the Father John Angus Rankin Cultural Centre/ Taigh an t-Sagair or through the purchasing of a Mass card.
