HAZEL ISOBEL MURRAY

Funeral service for the late Hazel Isobel Murray, 85, Antigonish, was held August 28 in St. James United Church, Antigonish, with Reverend Doug Stewart officiating.

Reader at the funeral service was Karen Perro. Eulogist was Katlyn Perro. Music was provided by Hee-Jung Choi and St. James Choir.

Active pallbearers were Gerard MacGillivray, Gary Murray, Adam MacGillivray, Andrew Murray, Kelsey MacGillivray and Jim Perro.

Honorary pallbearers were Aurore MacDonell, Jean Barkhouse, Evangeline Babin, Margie Farrell, Michael and Jackie Wilson and Walter and Janet Proctor.

Born December 19, 1933, in Linden, Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Burley and Annie (McFadden) Works. She worked as her husband Vernon’s stenographer with Antigonish Appraisal Services and managed the family income in a way for her to be at home when her children returned from school, sports, or part-time jobs. She enjoyed bowling, ceramics, reading, knitting, curling and getting together with friends to play cards and sewing.  She was a member of St. James United Church UCW, where she spent countless hours volunteering for church functions.  She and her husband enjoyed travelling each year with friends and family, and spending time at their cottage for more than 40 years.  She was a cancer survivor for 40 years and lived with Alzheimer’s for 11 years. 

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Vernon; four children, Michael, Halifax; Terri (Jim) Perro, St. Andrews; Karen (Gerard) MacGillivray, Gaspereaux Lake; Gary (Donna), Timberlea; nine grandchildren, Jacqueline (Kareem), Karen, Tyler, Katlyn (Brian), Jonathan (Erica), Adam (Olivia), Kelsey, Emma and Andrew; two great-grandchildren, Barrett, Lucas; sister, Shirley (late Gerald) Nelson, Truro; brother, Frank (Marion), Truro; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation, VON Antigonish, or the Antigonish and Area Homemakers.
