Helen Mae Sampson

Funeral service for the late Helen Mae Sampson, Antigonish, was held October 19 in St. James United Church, with Reverend Peter Smith officiating. Burial was in St. James/St. Paul Cemetery.

Mrs. Sampson died October 12, 2019.

Music for the funeral service was provided by Tyrus Wallace.

Pallbearers were Ian Boyd, Gerald Pelly, Darlene Gaylor, Robert Cunningham, George Dimitropoulos and Gordie Keating.

Born in Guysborough, she was a daughter of the late John ‘Jack’ and Odessa (Borden) Pelley. She enjoyed a good laugh and her bingo games.  In her spare time, she enjoyed her morning walk, knitting, reading, baking, or going out to dinner with her son, Jahnyia.  She moved to Montreal in 1963, where she met Eugene, who she married on July 23, 1966. She was employed by the Salvation Army Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide, and she also worked at various other jobs.  She moved back to Antigonish in 1993, where she was an active member of St. James United Church. She continued following her passion for caring for clients, retiring in 2015.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail (Jimmy) George, Antigonish; son, Jahnyia Sampson, Antigonish; two grandchildren, Latitia, Channelle; friend, Glen Cromwell; sister, Delores (Gerald) Pelly; brother, Harold (Lillian) Pelly; four sisters-in-law, Vera, Melba, Polly, Lillian.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene; daughter, Eva; three brothers, Joseph, Douglas, Claire; four sisters-in-law, Madeline, Eleanor, Lois, Etty; five brothers-in-law, Herman, Reg, Stanley, Elroy, Lawrence.

Memorial donations may be made to L’Arche Antigonish, St. James United Church or a charity of choice.
