Isabel Carmel (Callahan) Delorey

Funeral service for the late Isabel Carmel (Callahan) Delorey, 76, Antigonish, formerly of Pomquet, Antigonish County, was held October   23 in Ste. Croix Church, Pomquet, with Father Dan MacDonald officiating, assisted by Deacon Art Riley. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. Delorey died Oct. 19, 2019, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Readers at the funeral Mass were Jeannette Jewells, Jamie Campbell and Judy MacNeil. Michael Benoit, Herbie Callahan and Margaret Zinck presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by soloist Tyrus Wallace and piper Sandra Gordon MacIsaac.

Pallbearers were Jackie Hutton, Francis MacDonald, Robert Delorey, Leo Callahan, John Benoit and Carl Jewells.

Born in Giant’s Lake, she was the daughter of the late John Angus and Mary (MacNeil) Callahan. She started her working career as a telephone operator in Antigonish and through the years was a waitress at many local restaurants. Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Mount St. Bernard. She took great joy in baking, preparing a meal and providing a hot cup of tea for family and friends. She was especially well known for her cookies, pies and pickles. She loved to garden and especially enjoyed the maple tree. Over the years, as a resident of Pomquet, she was involved with the ladies’ club and women’s bowling league. She participated in card games, bingo and especially music and the love of dance.

She is survived by four children, Anita (Brian) Tompkins, Calgary; Gary (Jacqueline) Delorey, Harbour Centre; Denise (Delorey) Stiles, Lower Sackville; John Dominic (Candace) Delorey, Black Diamond, AB; stepson, Jamie (Sangita) Campbell, Connecticut; 11 grandchildren, Caitlyn Delorey; Sean Tompkins; Nathan and Nicholas Stiles; Dominic, Joshua, Charlyce, Colby, Natasia, Issac, Declan Delorey; sister, Pearl MacDonald, Addington Forks; several brother and sisters-in-law; many special nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by husband, John Thomas Delorey; companion, John Campbell; five brothers, Bernard, Jim, Sandy Joseph, Francis; Robert, in infancy; five sisters, Mary, Theresa, Ann, Marie;  Margaret, in infancy.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation.
