J. A. Richard Fougere

Funeral service for the late Joseph Ambrose Richard ‘Rick’ Fougere, 63, Havre Boucher, Antigonish County, was held January 4 in St. Paul’s Church with Father Allan MacPhie officiating, assisted by Deacon Berkley Guthro. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Fougere died December 30 in St. Martha's Regional Hospital.

Readers at the funeral Mass were Yvonne Sampson and Marlo MacKay. Taylor, Brooke, Madison and Reagan DeGruchy presented the offertory gifts. Eucharistic ministers were Darryl Breen and Susan Wood. Music was provided by St. Paul’s Church Choir and violinist John Pellerin.

Pallbearers were Gary DeGruchy, Bernie Fougere, Gordie DeCoste, Hartley Fougere, Ronnie Brow and Martin Anderson.

Born October 3, 1956, in Antigonish, he was a son of the late Ambrose and Peggy (MacDonald) Fougere. He was postmaster in Havre Boucher for more than 30 years, where he enjoyed both helping and chatting with his customers.  He gave generously of his time, volunteering for church and community. He was a member of the Havre Boucher Veterans’ Association, a lifetime member of the Havre Boucher Kinsmen Club, and a member of St. Paul’s Parish Council, for which he held the position of chair of the building committee for the new St. Paul’s Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing cards, listening to music and hanging out with the family dog, Mischa. He was an avid sports fan. He coached ball for many years, played softball, hockey and golf and enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially cheering on the Habs.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda (Bennett); daughter, Amber Fougere (Dirk Xanthos), Melbourne, Australia; son, Justin Fougere (Tara MacDonald), Frankville; two granddaughters, Sophie and Quinn Fougere; sister, Marlene Fougere (Scott MacKay), Waverley.

Memorial donations may be made to the Havre Boucher Playground Fund or St. Paul's Cemetery.
