JOHN FRANCIS GREEN

John Francis Green

Funeral service for the late John Francis Green, 41, Port Hawkesbury, was held December 2 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery.

Mr. Green died November 25, 2019, at home, as a result of heart failure.

Born January 2, 1978, in Antigonish, he was the son of Francis Green (Joyce Jones), Sydney and Julia Smith-Green, British Columbia. At an early age, he knew his direction in life. A natural people person, he enjoyed meeting people, hearing about their lives, helping and making them laugh. His generosity was limitless and individuals and groups near and far have been the recipient of his philanthropy. His second home was Port Hastings Fire Department, where he was a long-time volunteer fire-fighter and called bingo on Thursday nights for many years. At the age of 21, he purchased Green’s Funeral Home. The early years of business ownership were not easy, however, with his determination and commitment to the communities and families he was privileged to serve, he grew the business into what it has become today. Catherine Cogswell and Mike Halfpenny were more than his colleagues, they stood by him and supported him every step of the way. He served as president of Funeral Service Association of Canada, current president of Funeral Service Association of Nova Scotia and served on the Board of Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors of Nova Scotia, where he advocated for funeral professionals and the families they serve. He was currently enrolled as an Apprentice Embalmer with the Funeral Services Program at NSCC, Kingstec Campus. Politically, he was a dedicated member of the PC Party, ran in past elections and supported local, provincial and national candidates. He and his partner worked tirelessly with the Forget Me Not Animal Rescue Society to provide food and shelter and trap/neuter/release.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his partner, Ashley Taylor; sister, Racheal Green, British Columbia; parents-in-law, Rick and Annette (Pike) Taylor, Sydney River; brother-in-law, Ryan (Karen) Taylor, Cole Harbour; nieces, Ava and Maddy Taylor, Cole Harbour; god-daughter, Kinslee McAleer;  several aunts, uncles, cousins.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Albert and Catherine (Huntley) Green; maternal grandparents, Richard and Peggy (Dorton) Smith.

Memorial donations may be made to CA-R-MA Antigonish, 279 Beaver Meadow Road, Antigonish, NS B2G 2K8, Port Hawkesbury Food Bank, 514 Granville Street, Port Hawkesbury, NS  B9A 2M9 or Port Hastings Fire Department, 15 Old Victoria Road, Port Hastings, NS  B9A 1L2
