John Francis Joseph (Jack) Sears
Funeral service for the late John Francis Joseph (Jack) Sears, 89, was held Decermber 29 in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Antigonish, with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetry at a later date. Mr. Sears died December 22, 2018. Readers at the funeral Mass were Kristen Haverkort, Mary Sears and Lynn MacGillivray. Leah Van Rossum and Chelsea Van Rossum presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Ty Wallace. Eucharistic minister was Donald MacDonald. Pallbearers were Donald MacDonald, Sears Forbes, Kerry MacLellan, Michael MacPherson, Rodney Sears and John Beaton. Kind, gentle and much-loved, he worked many years in maintenance at St. F.X., often holding down two jobs to provide for his family. He loved his family, especially watching the grandchildren and then great-grandchildren grow up. He always had a passion for art, seeing beauty in nature and everyday life. He loved to fish, play golf, dance, country music - not country rock - and paint. In later years, as he slowed down a bit, he hated to miss a bingo game at JJ Carroll House. He is survived by four daughters, Linda (Antigonish); Brenda (John van Rossum), Truro; Patrice (Truro); Elaine (Chad Norman), Truro; three sons, John (Lisa), Antigonish; Paul (Edwina), Truro; Robert (Antigonish); son-in-law, Donnie MacDonald (Antigonish); brother-in-law, John Tompkins, Antigonish; wonderful friend Cheryl; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Monica Downey and Jeremiah Sears, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Power); two daughters, Cathy, Marlene; seven brothers and sisters and their spouses. Memorial donations may be made to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.
