Judith Louise Kawaja

Funeral service for the late Judith ‘Judy’ Louise (Proctor) Kawaja, 72, Port Hawkesbury, was held October 4 in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Father Conrad Edwards officiating.

Mrs. Kawaja died September 27, 2019.

Born on March 28, 1947, in Evanston, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Edna and Wallace Proctor. She went to school in Whiteside and Mabou before settling in Port Hawkesbury to raise a family. She led a life filled with boundless curiosity for the world and had an ability to find joy and beauty in the small things of life. She spent years volunteering with organizations including Development and Peace and Grandmothers to Grandmothers. She opened home to friends from the Coady International Institute and L’Arche Cape Breton. With enthusiasm, she traveled the world and, in later years, welcomed travellers into their B&B. She spent her last two years living in Ottawa with her daughter while undergoing treatment and later palliative care.

She is survived by four children, Nicole, Nancy, John, Cheryl; son-in-law, Colin; 12 grandchildren, Aiden, Ainslie, Rachel, Alison, Hannah, Cameron, Emma, Ryan, Mika, Brooklyn, Maggie Jane, Neil; two brothers, John, Mervin; two sisters, Anne, Rose.

She was predeceased by her husband, Darryl; three brothers, Michael, Wallace, Arthur; two sisters, Ellen, Loyola.

Memorial donations may be made to the Port Hawkesbury Food Bank or a charity of choice.
