Funeral service for the late Katherine Ann Elizabeth (MacDonald) Layes, 71, Merland, Antigonish County, was held May 23 in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie, with Father John Barry officiating, assisted by Deacon Art Riley. Mrs. Layes died May 18, 2019, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Readers at the funeral Mass were Tara Bowman, Nancy Olsen and Larry Wallace. Adam and Taylor Currie presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Ty and Tracey Wallace. Pallbearers were James Wallace, Timmy Partridge, Rosemary Wallace, Stephen Wallace, Jason Benoit and Edward Benoit. Honorary pallbearers were Kevin Bowman, Bernadette Bowman, Brian Peters, Sharlene Peters, Ryan Wallace, Paul Ehler, Judy Layes, Shannon Harding, Cathy Wallace and Nicole Wallace. Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Francis ‘Boom’ and Veronica Rose (Porier) MacDonald. She moved to Merland as a young mother, where she met the love of her life, Alex. She raised three children and was second mother to many of the neighbourhood children. Her home was always open and she welcomed everyone in, whether it was for a cup of tea, a hand of crib or a good conversation. She enjoyed singing kareoke, watching her humming birds, being outdoors in her garden or inside working on her crafts. She looked forward to Saturday afternoon radio bingo and hanging out with her ‘besties’, Rosemary Wallace and Aileen Layes. She is survived by her daughter, Tammy; two sons, Dwayne (Shannon), Jeff; 11 grandchildren, Timmy (Krista), Stefan (Crissy), Kristian, Lesley, Tyler, Shawn, Haley (Greg), Taylor, Adam, Jesse, Willow; four great-grandchildren, Twyla, Maxine, Jace, Paisley; three sisters, Marie (Brian), Irene (Roger), Ardyth (Tom); two brothers, Ivan (Patti), Wayne (Lauralee); several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Allan Currie; second husband, Alex Layes; sister, Veronica; brother, Francis, in infancy; step-father, Ira Colborne; son-in-law, John Allan Wallace; two brothers-in-law, Bobby Bowie, Herbie Scott; three sisters-in-law, Marilyn and Carolyn Wallace, Shirley Layes.
