Funeral service for the late Lucy ‘Johnena’ Corning, 82, Malignant Cove, Antigonish County, was held October 31 in St. Mary’s Church, Lismore, with Father Colin MacKinnon officiating.

Mrs. Corning died October 27, 2018, at home. Readers at the funeral Mass were Kari Stewart, Candace Hanifen and Madison MacNeil. Morgan MacNeil, Kathryn McLaughlin and Krystal Siokalo presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by the Lismore Choir, organist Phyllis McGraw and vocalist Terri Chisholm. Active pallbearers were D.J. Corning, Duncan Stewart, Darren Corning, Eddy Hanifen, David Corning and Bernard Hanifen, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Alex Chisholm, Harvey Ford, Sandy Stewart, Bill Stephen, Ronnie Caudle, - Alteen Angels - Mary Beaton, Trudy Kelly, Nan MacDonald and Myrna MacDonald. Lismore Sea Red Hat Society formed an honour guard. She was a daughter of the late Ronald and Anna (Murdock) Nicholson. She graduated as a CNA from Grace Maternity Hospital. She worked for a while before becoming a stay-at-home mom to five children. Later, she became well-known in the retail community, working at Goodman’s, Alteen Jewellers, The Book Shelf, MacGillivray’s Jewellers and Marie’s Flowers. She was happiest on the beach at the Cove enjoying her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and some special family and friends. She is survived by son, Shawn (Bonnie), Malignant Cove; three daughters, Ronda (Doug) Stewart, St. Joseph’s; Jan (Bernard) Hanifen, Lower South River; Sandra Comeau, Antigonish; 14 grandchildren, Donald James ‘DJ’ Corning, Darren Corning, David Corning, Shanna Stapfer, Duncan Stewart, Kari Stewart, Krystal Siokalo, Kathryn McLaughlin, Candace Hanifen, Andrea Hanifen, Eddy Hanifen, Bernard Hanifen, Jr., Morgan MacNeil, Madison MacNeil; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wini Nicholson, Starr Hilchey; sister-in-law, Doreen Nicholson; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Avard Corning; son, Donald, Jr.; brother, Robert Nicholson.
