Mamie Patricia ‘Mimi’ Gagnon

Funeral service for the late Mamie Patricia ‘Mimi’ Gagnon, 97, Antigonish, was held September 21 in St. Andrew’s Church, St. Andrews, with Father Andrew Gillies officiating, assisted by Deacon Art Riley. Burial was in South River Cemetery.

Mrs. Gagnon died September 7, 2019, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish.

Altar servers at the funeral Mass were Minnie van de Wiel, Neil MacIsaac and Wayne Mullins. Readers were Dylan Gagnon, Sarah Murphy and Morgan Gagnon. Thomas Murphy and Michael Murphy presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Margaret MacGregor MacDonald.

Urn bearers were Dylan Gagnon, Sarah Murphy, Morgan Gagnon, Thomas Murphy and Michael Murphy.

Born in Québec City, she was a daughter of the late Napoléon and Eleanora (Pagé) Fleury.

She met her future husband, Bernard E.U. Gagnon of Vancouver, when he came to Québec City to attend the wedding of his sister to her brother.  She was a loving wife, a devoted mother and a very involved and entertaining grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an energetic homemaker whose great achievement in life was providing a warm, safe and caring environment for a family of nine which, beside the six children she bore and brought up, also included her mother-in-law, ‘Granny Rose’. She did all this with her trademark ‘joie de vivre’ a great sense of humour and her ability to produce delicious comfort food.  She was a social and sociable lady, always managing to make personal connections with everyone she met and liked, be it her local cab driver, the owner of her favourite pizza place, her neighbours, or anyone else she met and liked anywhere she went. She was also always ready and willing to help with in any way she could.

She is survived by six children, Michèle (late Bill) Murphy, St. Andrews, Antigonish County; Andrée (husband Einar) Stephansen, Trondheim, Norway; Lee Gagnon, Mont Tremblant, Quebec; Marc (wife Karen) Gagnon, Saint John, New Brunswick; Carl Gagnon, Montréal, PQ; Roderick Gagnon, Vancouver, British Columbia; nine grandchildren, Thomas Murphy, St. Andrews; Marc (wife Emily) Murphy, California; Sarah Murphy, Halifax and Toronto, Ontario; Michael Murphy, Halifax; Carl Joakim (wife Monica) Gagnon, Oslo, Norway; Kirsta (husband Patrick) Arseneault; Kerry (husband Steve) Swonell, Victoria, B.C.; Dylan (wife Melissa) Gagnon, Halifax; Morgan Gagnon, London, Ontario; six great-grandchildren, Andreas Liodden Gagnon, Perry Leigh Arseneault, Madison Gale, Parker Gale, Quinn Swonell, Finn Gagnon.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard; six siblings, Raymond and Claude Fleury, Marielle Fiset, Pauline Chapais, Estelle Fleury, Liliane (Lili) Fleury.

Memorial donations may be made to the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation or St. Andrew’s Parish.
