Funeral service for the late Mary Jean Hanhams, 68, Canso, was held September 7 in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso, with Father Jonathan Nnajiofor officiating, assisted by Father Dan MacDonald. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Hanhams died September 1, 2018 in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born Sept. 19, 1949, in Canso, she was a daughter of the late Bernard and Margaret D. ‘Peggy’ (Pembroke) Kavanagh. She was a local business owner for more than 30 years, starting with Hanhams Ultramar in the early 1980s, moving on to the Last Port Motel, where she retired with her loving husband in 2012. She was a devoted member of the Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso, and an active member of the Canso Lions Club. She cherished times spent with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing bingo, darts and going to card plays. She is survived by two sons, Michael (Amanda), David (Michelle), both of Canso; daughter, Angela (Jerome), Montague P.E.I.; five brothers, Sandy (Martha), Canso; Paul, Ottawa; Buns (Darlene), Antigonish; Jim, B.C.; Kevin ‘Abner,’ Canso; two sisters-in-law, Veronica Kavanagh, B.C.; June Kavanagh, Dartmouth; six grandchildren, Kelsey (Trey), Erica, Brandon, Dalton, Dylan, Brooklyn; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Captain Fred Hanhams; two brothers, Mike, Joe; sister, Sheila; niece, Mary Brodowich; nephew/godson, Shane Deon; brother-in-law, John Deon; sister-in-law, Donna Kavanagh.
