MARY JESSIE BEATON

Mary Jessie Beaton

Funeral service for the late Mary Jessie Beaton, 98, St. Ninian, was held September 30 in St. Andrews Church, Judique, with Father Allan MacMillan officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Beaton died September 24, 2019, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.

Born December 24, 1920, in River Center, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Flora (MacIsaac) Campbell. As the youngest of nine siblings, she lost her mother at the age of 16 months. She had incredible faith and, in her later years when she could no longer attend mass, she never missed Mass for Shut Ins. She enjoyed visitors offering them a cup of tea, some homemade bread and a plate of sweets. One of the biggest enjoyments was card games and if a game was not happening, she would be busy on the phone organizing one to be played at her house. She enjoyed entertaining in her home and loved listening to stories as well as sharing some of her own. She enjoyed guitar music, especially a room full of family and a sing-along while tapping her toes. As the family historian, she had a wonderful memory, especially for dates and relationships. When she wasn’t busy entertaining or socializing, she could be found reading, knitting, watching Jeopardy, the Blue Jays or making puzzles all of which kept her mind sharp. On more than one occasion, she dressed up for Halloween and joined in on the local parades. She was the last surviving member of her family.

She is survived by nine children, Florence, Judique; Danena, St Ninian; Gerard (Claire),Theresa (Arthur), both of  Mabou; Colin (Joan), Boston; Virginia (Gordie) Judique; Lauchie (Liz) Troy; Charlie (Diane), Port Hood; Jackie Campbell, Thunder Bay, whom she raised as her own; 11 grandchildren, Brennan (Sandra), Meghan, Andrew (Lindsay), John, Ryan (Amey), Kyle (Krista), Erin (Trevor), Krissy (Jeremy), David (Danette), Patricia (Cohen) and Stacy (Kevin); 14 great-grandchildren, Denver, Ally, Jack, Jessie, Paige, Charli, Nolan, Emerson, Ivy, Eamonn, Levi, Olan, Peyton, Quinn; four sisters-in-law, Theresa MacDonell, Judique Intervale; Kaye Brady, Dartmouth; Elizabeth Beaton, Mabou; Emma Beaton, Halifax; many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander; three sons, Malcolm (Sandy), Donald Angus, Joseph; five brothers Dan (Jean), John Hector (Bessie), John Angus (Christie), Roddie (Mary Ann), Collie; three sisters, Catherine Cannon (Ernest), Margaret MacDonald (John Alex); one, in infancy.
