MARY TERESA GOODWIN
Funeral service for the late Mary Teresa Goodwin, 87, was held July 31 in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, with Father Bernie MacDonald officiating.
Mrs. Goodwin died July 24, 2019.
Born February 22, 1932, in Inverness and raised in Mabou, she was the daughter of the late Catherine Isobel ‘Katie Belle’ (Boyle) and Joseph Edward Doyle. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1952 and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Toronto in 1953, where she studied public health and nutrition. She joined the Christian Women’s Community Grailville in Ohio for two years, which inspired her to dedicate her professional life to nutrition and public health. She married Leonard Goodwin and settled in Maryland, where she raised her family and worked as a public health nutritionist for more than two decades. She published two books and numerous articles in the field of childhood nutrition. She testified at the U.S. Congress and United Nations to ensure funding for various nutrition programs. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, hiking, family history, yoga, spirituality, and social and environmental causes. Upon her retirement, she returned to Mabou and developed the children's garden.
She is survived by three children, Jonathan, Micah, Rachel; son-in-law, John; three grandchildren, Cullen, Caleigh, Cameron.
She was predeceased by brother, Jerome Angus Doyle.
