MIKE CHISHOLM

Mike Chisholm

Funeral service for the late James Micheal Chisholm, 67, was held January 6 in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Josephs, with Father Lazarus Guria officiating.

Readers at the funeral Mass were Rachel MacLean, Natalie MacLean, Ashley Cameron and Pauline Chisholm. Anna Chisholm, Simon Chisholm and Lachie MacLean presented the offertory gifts. Eucharistic minister was Mary Kay Barter. Music was provided by Ty Wallace.

Pallbearers were Chris Chisholm, Gabe Chisholm, Josh Chisholm, Jeff Chisholm, Mike MacLean and Jack MacLean.

Born May 2, 1952, in St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, he was the eldest of 11 children of the late Gertie and Jack Chisholm, Ohio. He learned to farm alongside his father, raising dairy and beef cattle. When he was 17 years old, his father died and the whole family had to pull together to carry on farming. His life experiences granted him a respect for nature and the outdoors, which piqued his curiosity through weather, wildlife, foliage and foraging. In addition to being a farmer, he also spent 44 years in public service with the Department of Transportation, operating a road grader. He was an accomplished hunter who never missed a season nor a shot. Sunday trips to Tim's, landing lobster gear and trips to the rink became routine pleasures in his life. He enjoyed a game of crib, slapstick laughs and a perfect potato patch.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Michelle (DeCoste); five children, Chris (Pauline), Aimee (Mike MacLean), Gabe (Riley), Jeff (Shana), Josh (Megan); 16 grandchildren, Anna, David, Norah, Jack, Rachel, Natalie, Lachie, Alexandra, Simon, Myra, Sophie, Isaac, Leo, Rex, Will, Finley; three sisters, Judy (Walter Cameron), Bonita (John Willie MacLean), Mary (Dave MacInnis); four brothers, John (Beverly), Jim, Donald (Anne Marie), Lawrence; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Mary, in infancy; Joan, Gwen; brother, Gabriel; parents-in-law, Curtis and Helen DeCoste.

Memorial donations may be made to the R.K.MacDonald Foundation.
