RITA MARGARET ROSS
Funeral service for the late Rita Margaret (McPhee) Ross, 94, formerly of Hillcrest Street, was held June 13 in St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish, with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Mrs. Ross died June 6, 2019, in Green Meadows Seniors Residence, North Grant.
Readers at the funeral Mass were Leonard MacDonald and Judy MacKenzie. Eucharistic minister was Marius Langley. Music was provided by Emery Van de Wiel.
Urn bearers were grandsons Liam and Callum MacIsaac.
Members of St. Martha’s Hospital Ladies Auxiliary formed an honour guard.
Born October 6, 1924, in Pendleton, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Veryl (Harrigan) McPhee. She worked for Bell Telephone’s business office until her marriage to Sandy Ross in 1951. They moved to Montreal, where her husband worked with the Bank of Nova Scotia until 1954. They moved to Antigonish, where her husband accepted a job with the Bergengren Credit Union. She volunteered with many community organizations, such as St. Martha’s Hospital Auxiliary and the CWL Fall Fair. She was also a money counter (affectionately referred to as the holy rollers) with St. Ninian Cathedral. In the early 1970s, she started making wedding and birthday cakes. This continued for many years, making cakes for many of the residents of Antigonish.
She is survived by son, Allan (Denise), Calgary; daughter, Patsy, Halifax; four grandchildren, Liam, Callum, John, Kathleen; sister, Lois, Ottawa.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sandy.
