Funeral service for the late Teresa ‘P.D.’ MacDonald, 92, Antigonish, was held June 21 in St. Ninian Cathedral with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Mrs. MacDonald died May 17, 2018, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Readers at the funeral Mass were Gerard MacDonald, Len MacDonald and Don MacDonald. Eleanor Brosha, Teresa MacDonald and Mary MacDonald presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by organist Emery Van de Wiel, soloist Sister Catherine Ann MacGillivray, violinist, Karen Beaton, organist Margaret MacGregor MacDonald, piper Scott Williams and her children. Urn bearers were Mike MacDonald and Tom MacDonald. Honorary pallbearers were Veronica Novak, Angela Brosha, Fran Nunn, Florence MacEachern, Maria Somjen and Jim McMullin. Born in 1925 in Montreal, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Elizabeth ‘Mamie’ (Vauthier) O’Flaherty. After raising a large family, she worked in several managerial positions, including McKenna’s Drug Store, The Claymore Motel and Alteen’s Jewelers. She completed her work career as the coordinator of The Antigonish Town and County Home Care, where she and her friend and colleague, Beulah McPhee, delivered services to area senior citizens. She was proud of her Irish heritage and taught her children many Irish songs. Music was a big part of her life right up until the end. She was a very capable piano player and, when she became a resident at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home and in declining health, she could still play countless war era tunes from memory. She was committed to her community and taught her children the importance of social justice and doing their share. She enjoyed volunteering at the Food Bank and with St. Vincent de Paul. She was the last surviving member of her family. She is survived by five sons, Michael, Don, Leonard (Betty), Tom (Catherine), Gerard (Karen); three daughters, Mary, Eleanor, Teresa; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Peter Donald ‘P.D’ MacDonald; second husband, Malcolm ‘Mac’ Roberts; granddaughter, Audrey Hibbs; four sisters, Eleanor, Margaret, Agnes, Mildred; three brothers, Ted, Ed, Leonard; son-in-law, Louis Brosha.
