William MacGillivray

Funeral service for the late William MacGillivray, 98, was held October 27 in St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish, with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mr. MacGillivray died October 24, 2018. Readers at the funeral Mass were Linda MacGillivray, Jacob MacGillivray and Megan (MacGillivray). Grandchildren and great-grandchildren presented the offertory gifts. Eucharistic minister was Lynn Whelan. Music was provided by Emery Van de Weil. Pallbearers were Chris MacGillivray, Adam Large, Billy Joe MacGillivray, Max MacGillivray, Duncan MacGillivray, Craig Large, Donavan MacGillivray and Ian MacGillivray. Born July 12, 1920, in William’s Point, Antigonish County, he was a son of the late Angus A. and Catherine (Cassie MacLean) MacGillivray. He attended Morrison School and, in 1939, he joined the Canadian Army. In 1941, he was sent overseas where he saw action in England, Italy, Belgium and Germany. He took part in the Liberation of Holland and consequently was awarded the Dutch Medal of Remembrance. After his discharge from the army, he returned home and eventually was employed by Canada Post, from which he retired in 1983. He was a life-long member of St. Ninian Parish and the Royal Canadian Legion. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and tending his garden. As well, he enjoyed playing cards, darts and bowling. In his later years, he enjoyed reading but, above all, his daily drives to William’s Point. He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Hilda (Keay); four daughters, Joy Ann (Louis) Arsenault, Montreal; Gail (Bob) Large, Wellington, NS; Lynn (Frank) Whelan, Havre Boucher; RoAnn (Larry) Clavelle, Calgary, Alberta; five sons, Regan (Pat) MacGillivray, Antigonish; Dr. Bill (Cathy) MacGillivray, Miramachi, New Brunswick; Karl (Linda) MacGillivray, Antigonish; Angus, Guy (Sharon) MacGillivray, both of William’s Point; daughter-in-law, Darlene MacGillivray, Kenora, Ontario: 27 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; brother, Omar, Antigonish; sister, Claire, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Scott; grandson, Edward Whelan, in infancy; five sisters, Catherine, Marg, Sarah, Rose, Mary-Janet, 10 brothers, Jack, Collie, Ral, Father Joe, Duncan, Hughie, Johnny, Campbell, two, in infancy.
