William Xavier 'Billy' Gillis

Funeral service for the late William Xavier ‘Billy’ Gillis, 65, R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, formerly of Cross Roads Ohio and College Street, Antigonish, was held October 18 in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Josephs, with Father Lazarus officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Gillis died October 15, 2019, in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.

He was a son of the late Hugh Duncan and Anne (MacDonell) Gillis. He was a graduate of CRVS, Port Hawkesbury and employee of Michelin Tire. He became a quadriplegic at the age of 20 and, despite his disability, enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed food and spending time with his friends and family. He loved his trips and chats on Main Street, playing cards, visitors, and family get-togethers.

He is survived by three brothers, John Hugh (Lorelle), Gasperaux Lake; Calum, Purl Brook; Tommy (Tracy), Saltsprings; five sisters, Mary (Andy) MacDonald, Heatherton; Katy (Frank) Pavelski, Massachusetts; Sarah Gillis (Joe MacLean), Ohio; Margaret (Stephen) MacKenzie, Antigonish; Lois Gillis (Tim Leigme); sister-in-law, Marie Gillis, Ohio; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by brother, Joseph.

Memorial donations may be made to the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation.
